Medical Transcription Certificate Schools

When entering the field of medical transcription, you need to be aware of the different possibilities open to you and how to go about them. It is very common to choose the shortest and easiest program to simply get your foot in the door with an entry level position and then advance your studies while collecting work experience.

Medical Transcription Certificate Schools

To do this, attending medical transcription certificate schools to attain your certificate in 9-12 months is the best way. You can do this by attending schools in person or by completing a course online, but a certificate will get you started working in your medical transcription career.

A medical transcription certificate is designed for a student who either has no previous experience in the field and simply has a high school diploma, or for someone who has already gone through medical training and is looking to specialize in certain areas or renew their education.

Grade Requirements

You can expect to study subjects like the procedures of medical transcription, medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, how to use transcription software and equipment and extensive English writing, editing and proofreading classes. If you pass all your classes with a minimum of a 2.5 GPA or a 75% average, you will be eligible to move to the next step.

You will have a mandatory externship to complete where you go to a medical facility to put your skills to the test. The externship could be up to 160 hours and you will only pass and obtain your certificate if the medical transcription professional who supervises your work deems you competent and ready.

Online Programs

Due to the short length, most people complete their medical transcription certificate schools online, and some great schools that offer this program are Kaplan University, US Career Institute, The Michigan Community College Virtual Learning Collaborative and Penn Foster Career School. You can dedicate as much or as little time as you can to complete your certificate on your terms.

It is important not to confuse a medical transcription certificate with medical transcription certification. Certification is not obligatory yet, but medical transcriptionists can opt to take a certification exam once they've completed their studies to gain this extra title of CMT (certified medical transcriptionist) which shows employers their competency level.

It is a personal choice and does carry a lot of credibility, but don't think that by getting a certificate that you are certified. If you completed an accredited course from medical transcription schools, you are eligible to become certified, but you must pass the national exam first.

Medical transcription certificate schools are easy to find online or in every area, so you need to decide what method of studying suits you best. Either way, you will need to study hard and maintain a high average to be eligible to even complete the course with your practical experience. Luckily, the course is only about a year long or less, so if you can maintain your focus for that length of time, you should have no problems passing and earning your medical transcription certificate.
