You will have a mandatory externship to complete where you go to a medical facility to put your skills to the test. The externship could be up to 160 hours and you will only pass and obtain your certificate if the medical transcription professional who supervises your work deems you competent and ready.

Due to the short length, most people complete their medical transcription certificate schools online, and some great schools that offer this program are Kaplan University, US Career Institute, The Michigan Community College Virtual Learning Collaborative and Penn Foster Career School. You can dedicate as much or as little time as you can to complete your certificate on your terms.

It is important not to confuse a medical transcription certificate with medical transcription certification. Certification is not obligatory yet, but medical transcriptionists can opt to take a certification exam once they've completed their studies to gain this extra title of CMT (certified medical transcriptionist) which shows employers their competency level.

It is a personal choice and does carry a lot of credibility, but don't think that by getting a certificate that you are certified. If you completed an accredited course from medical transcription schools, you are eligible to become certified, but you must pass the national exam first.

Either way, you will need to study hard and maintain a high average to be eligible to even complete the course with your practical experience.
