Free Online Medical Transcription Training
While free online medical transcription training is rarely available, you do have options. If you are looking to expand your education and learn more about being a medical transcriptionist, you may be able to make the cost of your schooling inexpensive or even free. Most certification programs and courses have a fee, but there are still online programs that you can complete from home.
In order to become employed as a medical transcriptionist, you need to complete postsecondary training at a community college, vocational school, or online program. Online programs work particularly well if you are currently working, raising a family, or have an unusual schedule for any reason. There are plenty of online schools offering transcription training.
Scholarships
While you may not be able to get free online medical transcription training, you might be able to get training at a significantly reduced cost by applying for scholarships. Apprenticeships
The AHDI and the Clinical Documentation Industry Association, or CDIA, will soon begin offering the possibility of apprenticeship programs for students in medical transcription. These programs will place students with others currently employed in the medical transcription field and will allow them to get more hands-on training. While this program is not currently in place, the ADHI and CDIA are working get it started. Apprenticeship programs are often low cost or free because you are working and helping out with medical transcription services while learning to do the job.
Company Provided Training
If you already work for a company that employs or needs medical transcriptionists, you may be able to convince them to pay for your online medical transcription training courses. Many companies offer to help pay for additional employee training if it will help the company. You may need to agree to stay with the organization for a while, but this may be a unique way to get free online medical transcription training.
The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity
The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity, formerly the American Association for Medical Transcription, is the best place to look for all of your transcription training and education needs and may even offer a few free online medical transcription training courses to its members. These courses are usually continuing education courses for currently certified medical transcriptionists.
You can also join the association for a small fee. Once you join the AHDI, you will have access to several benefits, including educational resources and networking opportunities to help your medical transcription career.
Exams
An important part of studying to be a medical transcriptionist is getting certified once you’ve finished your free online medical transcription training. In order to become certified, you need to sign up for an exam through the AHDI. This certification gives potential employers the peace of mind that you are well trained and knowledgeable in the field of medical transcription.
Exams run between $100 and $300 depending on what certification you are seeking. Unfortunately, there is no way to take these exams for free, but you do have the option to take them online for a slightly lower fee. If you have trouble affording the exams, you may be able to get scholarships, a student loan, or ask your employer to pay for the tests.
Medical transcription is a fast growing and in-demand career. In order to make sure transcriptionists do the best job possible, a significant amount of training is involved. Fortunately, many of these training programs are online and inexpensive. There are not many legitimate free online medical transcription training programs, but there are ways to get low cost training.
