The exam is $275, unless you are an AAMT member, in which case it is $195, and it is divided into 2 parts: a written and a practical part. In total it takes about 5-6 hours and is very comprehensive, so you will need to review your course materials well to be prepared for it. You will do the written part first, answering 120 multiple choice questions based on the program studies you completed. Questions will range from science, like anatomy, physiology and pharmacology to your language proficiency with grammar, writing and medical terminology. You will then take the second part of the exam where you will need to put your skills to the test and transcribe a variety of different medical reports.
Continuing Education
If you pass the exam, you will be a certified medical transcriptionist for three years, at which time you will need to renew your certification. If you don't pass, you can retake the exam as often as you want, but you are only able to take it twice in a 12 month span. Also, you must wait 6 months between failed exams to take the test again.
A certified medical transcription title is not necessary and never required, but by getting the extra title, you are showing employers a verification of your skill set as well as your dedication to your job.
