Certified Medical Transcription Training

Certified medical transcription training will boost a medical transcription career, increase you salary and open other career prospects. However, the road to being a certified medical transcriptionist is long and hard, presumably three to four years if you have not had previous experience in the field.

Getting Adequate Skills

Certified Medical Transcription Training

The first step in certified medical transcription training is taking a one-year course in medical transcription at an accredited medical transcription school. The medical transcription program is not compulsory to receive certification; however, you need it in order to get a job.

Although just typing what doctors say seems easy, a medical transcriptionist is responsible for providing a clear written account of the doctor’s prescription, the patient’s medical condition, and his check-up. This responsibility requires specialized training.

Schools that Offer a Medical Transcription Certificate

A number of institutions offer certified medical transcription training, the biggest being: Penn Foster, The Allied Schools and the US Career Institute:

  • US Career Institute is an institution with a 30-year history, offering a slightly modified curriculum for its top quality Medical Transcription course. Its duration is just four months, meaning you can start looking for a job straight away while the fee of $1300 is distributable monthly, free of interest. The examinations are all open book and the Institute sends all its study materials on time so the students can learn whenever they want. The US Career Institute a fully accredited institution whose qualification is recognized everywhere.
  • The Allied Schools have an online medical transcription course so you need not leave home to attain their accreditation. The institution believes that as real life is open book, and so should their exams. Everything is over the Internet and prepares you for the career of work-from-home medical transcriptionist.
  • Penn Foster is one of the biggest school and many wanting to become a medical transcriptionist have considered attending it. However, many unsatisfied customers spoil the image of the college. An unfriendly customer service, lack of sufficient information and strict sanctions for late payments may put off most applicants.

Finding a Job

Even before you finish your course, start applying at various institutions or using contacts to secure a job. Despite the economic downturn, many hospitals, pharmacies and medical laboratories are hiring more and more medical transcriptionists.

Getting the Most Out of the Experience

The Exam requires you to have two years of MT experience but you need not count the days if the current position fulfils your needs. The exam draws heavily on what you learn as an MT practitioner so try to consistently provide a high work quality. Do not be afraid to communicate with the colleagues, as they are an invaluable source of information and advice.

Alternatively, some colleges like Penn Foster offer specific certified medical transcription training but you might prefer the previous option, where you earn more than you spend. Some local institutions have free, state-funded courses (to fight unemployment), so take advantage of them.

The Certified Medical Transcriptionist Exam

Register with the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity to take their examination, choosing when and where – you can take it throughout the whole year. The normal fee is 275, which goes down to 195 for members of the AHDI. Prepare mentally and physically for it, getting plenty of sleep and rest beforehand.

After the Exam

Assuming you have graduated as a Certified Medical Transcriptionist, a new market of better wages is just waiting for you. As your certified medical transcription training must be constantly up to date, you have to renew your certification every three years so choose an employer who is willing to pay for such expenses.
